Picnic season is upon us and seeking the best picnic location is a sport for many. The following are the 10 best picnic locations in the Northeast United States. Organized by state, they’re evaluated by scenery, accessibility, and amenities.

Maine Lamoine State Park, Near Ellsworth is a nice 55 acre park for picnickers that prefer to escape the crowds on Mount Desert Island. Complete with an oceanside setting the park offers picnic areas, a dock, boat access, a pebble beach and fishing. Since it is just north of the island on the Maine coast, there are fantastic views of the northern side of the island and Cadillac Mountain.

Vermont Green Mountain National Forest offers the combination of a true wilderness experience for those interested in exploring the backcountry and 9 picnic areas. Each picnic area offers different views, amenities like grills and vault toilets, and of course many opportunities for adventure and relaxation.

New Hampshire

No trip to New Hampshire is complete without an exploration of the many falls and cascades in the White Mountain National Forest. If you’re looking for a quite picnic spot, a simple half-mile hike from almost any parking lot in the forest will take you to picturesque falls and quite picnic places. Simply spread your blanket and enjoy being alive. If you prefer a picnic area with more amenities, Lower Falls is your place. It is located on the Kancamagus Highway Lower Falls 7 miles west of Conway and with pools, sandy beaches, picnic tables, parking and changing rooms, it is a busy spot on hot summer afternoons.

New York Want to get away from the city but don’t feel like spending the day in the car? Visit Fort Tryon Park on the Hudson River. Fort Tryon offers views of the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge. Before or after lunch, Fort Tyron offers the opportunity to wander narrow stone paths and listen to the sound of birds and other small wildlife or visit the Cloisters, the branch of the Metropolitan Museum devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. Bring a blanket, find your perfect place and enjoy the scenic cliff-side views away from the city.

Still too close to the city? Want total privacy for your picnic? Visit Canoe-Picnic Point State Park, Located on the northeast end of Grindstone Island, facing Eel Bay and the Canadian Channel. It is only reachable by boat and offers you a quiet experience in a wooded area. Just south of the camping area is Picnic Point, a picnic ground with a beautiful picnic gazebo, shore dinner cooking facility and dockage.

Pennsylvania Little Buffalo State Park offers large, shaded lawn space surrounding several swimming pools. Additional amenities include a playground, boat rental, two picnic pavilions, horseshoe pits, restrooms and many picnic tables. The Main Picnic Area is closed November through April. The East Picnic Area, located by the Little Buffalo Historic District and open year-round.

Connecticut

Connecticut is one of the wonderful coastal states with numerous state parks along the lovely Long Island Sound. Silver Sands State Park, near Milford, is one of the best. The beach with an offshore island is connected to the mainland by a sand and gravel bar, submerged at high tide. Captain Kidd is reputed to have buried his treasure on the island in 1699. The island’s interior is closed May 1 through August 31 to protect heron and egret rookeries. Picnic facilities along with boating and fishing are plentiful.

Maryland Sandy Point State Park offers more than 786 acres of play space on the Chesapeake Bay. It offers a variety of recreational activities including swimming, fishing, crabbing, boating, windsurfing and of course picnic areas. The park’s beaches and picnic areas provide unparalleled views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge over the Chesapeake Bay as well as fantastic boat watching.

Rhode Island Misquamicut State Park offers one of the state’s most popular beaches with over a half mile of beachfront. There are also many local attractions for children. This modern pavilion includes many new concepts including rails, outside showers, tower and composting toilets. This beach does fill to capacity during sunny summer weekends.

Susquehanna State Park is located along the Susquehanna River valley and offers heavy forest cover and massive rock outcroppings. The park is also home to some of the most popular mountain biking trails in Maryland. The Deer Creek picnic area offers shaded picnic tables, grills, two picnic shelters and a modern restroom. Large open fields close by are great for family games or blanket and basket picnics.
