Environmental Issues Waste Management

Waste management is the process of handling and processing the waste material into a usable material. Waste management involves several other techniques, such as recycling of the scrap material. Waste management usually involves handling and monitoring the waste material. It may include liquid, solid, gaseous and even radioactive matter which can be harmful for a person’s health or the environment. The primary objective of waste management is to obtain resources from it which can be used later on.

The methods of handling waste differ from region to region. The monitoring and handling of toxic industrial is generally managed by the government in the urban areas while on the other hand the management of the general is the responsibility of the society.

There are generally two primary methods of disposing that include:

1) Landfill: It is the most widely used method of disposing the waste material. It usually comprises of burying the waste material in a land which is not being used for any purpose. Landfill is perhaps the most primitive method of waste disposal and if done properly it can be quite hygienic as well. But the landfill method is now considered to be a very expensive technique of waste disposal because of the decreasing available land for waste disposal. It is now very difficult to find a vacant land for huge waste material disposal. On the other hand, if landfill is not managed properly it can lead to a variety of environmental issues which may include the wind-blown waste, generation of pests and poisonous gases such as CO2 and MH4. The land used for waste disposal may not be fit for vegetation purposes in the near future.

2) Incineration: The incineration is a new method which has been adopted recently. It usually involves burning the entire waste material at a very high temperature. This method is also popularly known as the thermal treatment method. The incineration method transforms the disposable waste into gas, heat or ash. This method can be used to dispose all kinds of waste, such as solid, liquid or gas.

Environmental Issues In Japan

Japan, during its period of rapid economic growth after World War II had problems with their environment. The government, in an effort to address the problem, applied various measures like investing in R&D for environment friendly technologies and provided funding to the populace and encourage the various industries to construct pollution control facilities. Despite their efforts, none of these proved sufficient. Because of this, the government formed an advisory panel to look into Japan’s industrial structure and come up with preventive actions on the part of the industry that are important to protecting the environment. In observance with this panel’s suggestion, the government initiated the nation-wide Pollution Control Manager System, which obligates every company in their respective industries to set up pollution control and prevention personnel groups in their factories who is led by a station certified manager who is an expert in regulatory and technical aspects of pollution control in their locality. The move, combined with other preventive measures like the development of environmental friendly technologies and investment in pollution prevention facilities played an important role in Japan’s battle against environmental degradation. Because of this, Japan eventually succeeded in overcoming its ecological problems in the 1980s.

In the past few years, Chinese companies have worked tremendously to achieve the country’s goal of having a robust economic development. China’s foreign assistance has come in the form of new technologies that are pertinent in sustaining the high levels of production. But it is my observation that what China really needs is to build an environment-friendly society. Despite the economic disparity between China’s urban and rural areas, ordinary citizens are becoming more conscious about the environmental problems they face. The most crucial element in combating the environmental problem is to raise the awareness of both the companies and citizens. Japan, who was successful with their battle against environmental problems should help China come up with policies that provides greater emphasis in developing environmental training and educational programs customized to raise public awareness on environmental issues.

China is facing a serious environmental problem. Fast paced construction of Olympic related buildings coupled with its economic productivity proved to be very environmentally costly to China. Examples like waste water flushed out from chemical and paper manufacturing industries is polluting and poisoning rivers and lakes all over the country. Mishaps at chemical plants often hit news headlines. Their steel and cement production is probably the world’s largest and also contributes smog and CO2 emissions to its highest levels. The air pollution in Beijing, which is brought by the combined and widespread use of cars and factory emissions, prevents Beijing residents from enjoying clear sunlight. The spread of acid rain and the pollution of oceans beyond China’s borders is clearly becoming a global problem. Presently, The Chinese government has started reviewing its economy-oriented rules and has taken steps for the construction of a more environment-friendly society.

Recently, I visited Christiansburg, Virginia for a historical story opportunity with Norfolk Southern Railroad. They are in the process of upgrading 28 tunnels on a route between Hampton Roads, Chicago, and Virginia so they can accommodate double-stacked railcars. The tunnel I visited was originally built between 1911 and 1919, The cap of its concrete liner have been removed but it was replaced with rock bolt reinforcements and concrete to the exposed rock to accommodate the double-stacked cars. This distinct tunnel is the longest on the route at 0.6 miles. When I went inside, I saw heavy equipment working double time and I also saw the work in progress. I walked back and forth along its length. I also discovered that carved it was carved through a small mountain with about 180 feet of dirt and rock over my head. It was totally dark and it kinda scared me. The Only visible light were from the light the seeped through the entrances of the tunnel and the flashlight that i brought along with me.

Environmental Issues In America

While the goal of a company or firm is sustainability, the goal of the human species is to sustain themselves as well. Sustainability is a state of being that can be maintained indefinitely. Sustainable development, as defined by the United Nations General Assembly, meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations.

Companies prefer not to break even, but sustain themselves with a higher margin of safety. Similarly, we’d like to see human kind sustain themselves for many, many years to come. Unfortunately, we are not leading ourselves towards that path. The declining state of our environment has become a global epidemic, centered on consumer-focused countries like the United States of America. It is essential that we, as educated and responsible citizens, take action now in order to save the sacred place which we thrive upon.

Many people ask “How can I make a difference?” Although there are many simple solutions (consume recycled products, reduce energy use, etc.), environmentalism can even fit into our everyday lives – into the profession of accounting. Environmental accounting has been under discussion since the 1960s, but has expanded greatly in the last three decades. Now that environmentalism is in the public eye, it is more pertinent to the profession than ever.

Environmental accounting is a wonderful opportunity for individuals to pair their interest in the environment with a skill set in accounting. Despite the slowing economy, it is certain the demand for environmental accountants will rise. The demand for these specific professionals, however, is tied to environmental regulations originated in Washington, D.C. With the upcoming presidential election in November 2008, the future for these professionals is not predictable. It is clear, however, that the majority of front-running candidates have proposed actions within their platforms for the environment. Despite the politics of environmental regulation, it is very apparent America has taken an interest in environmental issues.

Although companies do not often recruit for these specific positions, it is something that students may specialize in later on in their career. Large companies, as well as accounting firms, often have environmental accountants on staff. Until this point, there have not been academic programs focusing on environmental accounting, nor a professional certification relating to the field. A great way to start towards this path would be with a college minor in environmental studies. Continuing Professional Education (CPE) courses focusing in this area will also serve accounting professionals well. Communication is a key skill environmental accountants must possess. They must be able to convey their knowledge to scientists, risk managers, public relations professionals, marketing staff and even senior executives.

Not only will environmental accountants serve as a vital part in a company’s social responsibility effort, but they will also be able to cut costs in an environmental friendly way. Companies may perform an environmental audit to determine which legislation is applicable to the company, assess the compliance, and provide environmental solutions. Accountants are able to understand the distribution of costs and use of resources – and can analyze ways companies will be able to lessen their ecological footprint. In this way, environmental accountants can take action for environmentalism on a much bigger scale.

While it is the environmental accountants’ responsibility to adhere to government guidelines, we should not overlook their role in improving environmental conditions. It is pertinent that environmental accountants work with public relation as well as marketing professionals, in order to promote the most eco-friendly products. Now, more than ever, America has begun to realize its’ ecological footprint on the Earth. The marketability of some commercial products depends on its level of environmental friendliness. Using recyclable materials will not only cut costs, but also impress consumers.

In upcoming years, environmental accountants will play a key role in business strategies. Environmental accountants have the power to satisfy management with financial figures, as well the community with social responsibility. These specific professionals will hold the key role in following environmental regulations. With hope, environmental accountants can do their part in moving towards sustainability.

While we may be able to connect our professional lives with the condition of our environment, I urge you to take action individually as well. Every small action has the power to make a difference. You can measure your ecological footprint at www.ecofoot.org. This will give you a greater understanding our impact on the environment, and how sustainable our practices are.
