Environmental Issues Food Packaging

Chemical adulterants in foods have an inhibiting effect on the workings of your internal body processes.

Here is a list of risks to you health because of food pollution:

1. Improper cooking methods will destroy vitamins.

2. Many drugs in foods, such as arsenic, mercury, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, bismuth tend to displace and upset the function of enzymes (digesters) and great increase the wasteful disposal of needed vitamins for your body’s health.

3. Astringents, solvents and emulsifiers drain out vitamins and minerals from the bloodstream and tissues of the body. Premature aging is often traced to a depletion of needed vitamins.

4. Preservatives, analgesics such as nicotine, alcohol, and aspirin cancel out the beneficial functions of nutrients you so carefully select for your body.

5. Antibiotics kill vitamin-producing organisms within the large intestine creating havoc in the entire glandular and hormonal system which serves to shape a person’s character and personality.

6. Bleaching agents used in white flour products destroy delicate nutrients and create faulty digestive problems.

7. Sulphuring of foods for preservation and use of sulphides to “freshen” the appearance of foods are destructive to body tissues. They also create internal mucus and toxic waste that accumulate and build internal toxemia.

8. Insecticides and disinfectants are often absorbed and retained in foods and create internal pollution.

9. Alkalin phosphatases, essential to your body to metabolize sugars and starches, are destroyed or inhibited by chemicals in foods.

10. Artificial colors and sweeteners are similar to coal tar dyes, inks, paints, injections, and sprays. If combustion from such chemicals is polluting our air, then you can imagine what is happening to foods that are entering your system, when such foods have been subjected to the same chemicalization as gasoline and floor varnish.

Environmental Issues England

A vacation in England can be filled with some of the most interesting sights anywhere in the world. The rich and illustrious history makes it the ideal destination for a family vacation with many attractions to suit all tastes. But with so much to see in England it can often be difficult to devise an itinerary. It is hoped the following information will make the decision making process a little easier for all.

One of the most interesting sighs in England is Hadrian’s Wall, situated in the north of the country it is a fascinating example of Roman military might and engineering. Roman soldiers once patrolled the wall that stretches from the east to the west coast, its construction a means of limiting the raiding activities of Pictish tribes in the north. Today the wall is a sublime tourist destination that allows those on vacation to see the rugged beauty of Northumberland whilst also discovering what life was like at the physical boundaries of the Roman Empire. There are numerous archaeological sites along the length of the Wall that give visitors an indication of military life in ancient times. It is advisable to get the hiking gear on to make the most of walking this fascinating and educational World Heritage Site.

For those with a penchant for nature a great idea for a vacation is to visit one of the most beautiful and stunning areas in all of England. The Lake District has long been visited for its wondrous mountains or fells. In literature it was the inspiration for greats such as William Wordsworth for its striking scenery and rugged nature. Today visitors come from far and wide to walk amongst the fells and to ascend Scafell Pike, the tallest mountain in England. The lakes that give the area its name are truly magical, whether your vacation includes touring Coniston Water or Derwent Water you are sure to return relaxed and rejuvenated.

England is a land of castles ranging from the imposing Windsor and Warwick to smaller keeps dotted around the countryside. A fascinating castle to visit is Tintagel in Cornwall, more for its mythical connections than its impressiveness. Today the remains are popular with tourists because of the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth, who placed it as the home of Uther Pendragon, who in later decades became the mythical King Arthur. Subsequently the Tintagel site has been proposed as the location of Camelot and the home of the Knights of the Round Table. While the site has certainly seen activity since the Roman period whether it was the home of Arthur is still a matter of debate; whatever the historical conjecture though, it remains as a brilliant tourist destination in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

If in Cornwall there is another tourist attraction that is perfect for families and those not inclined to delve into the depths of history. For those with a love of nature this is a perfect vacation idea; the Eden Project. The project is a complex structure of bio-domes that allow the visitor to go from a rainforest climate to a Mediterranean one in a matter of minutes. The plant species at the project include banana trees, bamboo to cacti and rubber trees meaning that the visitor is bombarded with biodiversity at every turn. With an educational facility on site all are given a better understanding of environmental issues and the importance of nature to the world, as a day out it is unrivalled for enjoyment and relaxation.

Hopefully this article has given those heading on vacation in England an idea of some of the wondrous attractions on offer. This is in no way an all encompassing list but instead highlights some personal favourites; with such a wide range of sights it is guaranteed that a vacation in England will be enjoyable, educational and relaxing.

Being a chef does not change the fact that you need to be environmentally involved. You need to be aware of the top environmental issues concerning you and you need to adopt various measures in order to respond to these problems. You can do something. In fact, you can do a lot. After all, you are the head of the kitchen. You can start your environmental programs inside your own kitchen.

Preserving the environment is very important. It doesn’t matter where you look at it. You need to adopt ecological principles and teach them to others. There is a huge difference that you can make. This primer basically covers the top environmental issues that you need to address as a chef.

Chemicals

Machines have made it extremely convenient for people to go about their daily activities. In fact, the kitchen has also benefited greatly from them. Unfortunately, chemicals have also been introduced together with these machines. There are more than 70,000 harmful chemicals out there and these pose a threat to lives and health. These chemicals are actually one of the top environmental issues that concern everyone these days. These harmful chemicals cause diseases like asthma and cancer. Unfortunately, they can be found everywhere! Even your kitchen cleaning products have harmful chemicals in them.

To combat the threats brought about by these harmful chemicals, you should consider using natural cleaning products without dangerous toxins. You should also make sure that you are using kitchen tools and dishware that are free from toxic chemicals.

Waste Products

Your kitchen creates waste products like leftover foods, plastic, papers, glasses, metals and more. Most of your garbage goes to landfills. If you don’t recycle and you don’t segregate your trash properly, these things get dumped on top of one another. Over time, segregating recyclable and biodegradable materials from those that are not would be difficult. This creates huge sloppy mess that creates nasty effects on the environment. Landfills are major producers of carbon dioxide and methane which are dangerous greenhouse gasses. You probably know that these gasses are probably one of the top environmental issues these days.

If you would like to do your own part in solving this problem, you need to get serious about recycling products. You also have to make sure that you purchase recyclable products. In fact, you should insist on this.

Chlorine

The garbage that is not thrown in landfills is often incinerated. Many of these incinerated materials are chlorinated paper products. Unfortunately, the burning of chlorinated materials basically results to an even more dangerous chemical which is referred to as dioxin.

In order to avoid contributing to the production of dioxins, you should make sure that you purchase paper products that are not chlorinated. Many kitchens purchase paper towels, so you should make sure that you are using non-chlorinated towels. In fact, why don’t you avoid purchasing these kinds of towels altogether. You should opt for cloth towels instead. These are more environmentally friendly.

Food

The existence of food products that are loaded with pesticides and chemicals is one of the top environmental issues that you need to address. This should be one of your major concerns. Many food products that are found in grocery stores or supermarkets are often genetically modified. Many meat products contain steroids, antibiotics and other chemicals. Unfortunately, although many food products contain these toxic materials, these additives are not often revealed in labels or packaging. As a result, many people suffer from various health risks arising from long-term consumption of these toxic foods.

As a chef, it is your responsibility to ensure that you provide your customers with healthy and nutritious meals. You can do this by purchasing organic food products. When purchasing these products, however, it is important that you buy organic food products locally. You will certainly help in reducing gas emissions resulting from the transport of organic products if you purchase locally-produced items.

Petroleum and Carbon Dioxide

The Greenhouse Effect is taking its toll and people are finally noticing. Unfortunately, you cannot patch the gaping hole in the Ozone layer. However, there are many things that you can do in order to reduce your ecological footprint. In fact, there are some things that you can do in the kitchen in order to reduce your petroleum or gas consumption. You can turn off the lights when you don’t need them. You can choose to use the air conditioner or the electric heater sparingly. You can choose not to pre-heat the oven. Doing all these little things will certainly help reduce your own environmental footprints.

These are some of the top environmental issues that concern people these days. As a chef, these things affect you. However, you can certainly adopt measures in order to do your part in resolving these problems.

If you plan to move to a new home or to build a home, you may draw a line through a fireplace as a necessity. Although people love the warmth, comforting crackling sounds, aromas, and moving light a wood burning fire provides, fireplaces can emit polluted air into your home and into your neighborhood.

Most home shoppers request a fireplace. Home buyers desire a hearth, which symbolizes home. Families gather around the fireplace during holiday celebrations and quiet conversations. Book lovers enjoy curling up next to a fire on a cool afternoon. Many new homes feature fireplaces in the main bedroom. After all, what’s more romantic than a fire?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, wood-burning fireplaces emit nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, organic gases, and particulate matter. These pollutants can cause serious health problems for children, pregnant women, and people with respiratory problems. Like cigarette smoke, some of these elements contain cancer-causing properties.

Some urban cities have considered banning wood-burning fireplaces altogether to stem the flow of pollutants in the smog-filled air. California cities and counties have enacted local ordinances to limit the growing wood smoke problem. Mammoth Lakes, Squaw Valley, Cloverdale, Fresno, and many cities and counties in the Bay Area permit installation of only U S EPA certified wood-fired appliances in all new construction. Since 1991, the Bay Area AQMD has issued advisories for a voluntary no-burn program on poor air quality nights, “Spare the Air Tonight.”

But wait! Solutions exist so you can enjoy your fire. To keep pollutants from entering your room air, you can install a certified clean-burning fireplace insert and a glass screen. Buy a carbon monoxide monitor and an oxygen-depletion sensor to ensure safe air. The new fireplace systems keep pollutants from leaving your chimney.

Other considerations for you to ponder include the source of heating for your home. What happens when natural gas demand outpaces production? Prices skyrocket. And if your heat comes from a coal-burning electrical plant, doesn’t the burning coal produce toxins that pollute the air?

If you’re building a new home, consider installing a Pellet Stove, the most efficient and least polluting of the new stove designs. Pellet Stoves provide less than 1 gram per hour of particulate emissions. Most of these stoves s require electricity and burn compressed wood waste formed into pellets.

Be kind to yourself and to the environment. Consider these environmental issues when you light up your fire.
